Frequently Asked Questions
What output current can OPA547 deliver?
OPA547 delivers up to 500mA continuous output current. It can source and sink current symmetrically. The adjustable current limit (set by external resistor) protects the device and load from overcurrent conditions. Peak current can reach 750mA briefly.
How is the current limit set?
An external resistor between the I-LIMIT pin and V+ (or V-) sets the maximum output current. The formula is ILIMIT = 0.65V/RLIMIT for both sourcing and sinking. For 500mA limit, use 1.3Ω. This protects both the IC and the load.
What happens during thermal shutdown?
When die temperature reaches approximately 160°C, OPA547 reduces output current to limit power dissipation. If temperature continues to rise, it fully shuts down. Recovery is automatic when the device cools. A status flag pin indicates thermal limit.
What heatsinking does OPA547 need?
The DDPAK package provides thermal resistance of approximately 2°C/W to PCB. At 500mA output with 10V across the device, power dissipation is 5W, requiring good thermal design. A copper pour or heatsink pad on the PCB is essential.
