Frequently Asked Questions
What type of flip-flop is SN74HC109?
SN74HC109 contains two J-K flip-flops triggered on the positive (rising) edge of the clock. Each flip-flop has J, K-not, clock, preset (active-low), and clear (active-low) inputs, plus Q and Q-not outputs.
What is the maximum clock frequency?
At 5V VCC, the maximum clock frequency is 39MHz. At 3.3V, maximum frequency drops to approximately 25MHz. These speeds are suitable for most glue logic and moderate-frequency counter/divider applications.
How do preset and clear work on SN74HC109?
Both preset (PRE) and clear (CLR) are active-low asynchronous inputs that override the clock. PRE forces Q=1 regardless of clock, CLR forces Q=0. Both must be HIGH during normal clocked operation. They should not both be LOW simultaneously.
Can SN74HC109 be used as a frequency divider?
Yes, connecting K-not to VCC (forcing K=0) and J to the Q-not output creates a toggle flip-flop that divides the input clock frequency by 2. Two flip-flops can divide by 4. This is one of the most common applications for J-K flip-flops.
